LAWN CARE ADVICE

When Should You Do a Fall Cleanup in Niagara, and What Should It Include?

BY ROB PYCHEL · OWNERSEPTEMBER 9, 2026NIAGARA REGION

In Niagara, the practical window for a fall cleanup is the end of October through mid-November, after most of the leaves are down and before the snow settles in. A proper fall yard cleanup gets the leaves off the lawn and removed, clears the beds, gives the grass a final cut, and blows off the hard surfaces. Here’s why the timing matters and what each part is for.

01

Why the timing is late October to mid-November

Most of the trees around Niagara drop the bulk of their leaves through late October and into November. Clear a lawn in the first week of October and a good share of what’s still on the trees ends up on the grass a week later. The cleanup that counts is the one that happens after the last big drop, when what’s on the ground is more or less what’s going to stay there.

The other side of the window is the snow. Once the ground is frozen or the first lasting snowfall has settled, whatever is still on the lawn stays there until the snow goes in spring. So the practical window sits between the two: late enough that the trees are mostly bare, early enough that the ground is still open. In Niagara that usually lands between the end of October and the middle of November.

02

What a leaf layer does to a lawn over winter

A thin scatter of leaves is harmless and breaks down on its own. A thick layer is a different thing. Left in place through winter, it blocks light from the grass beneath it and traps moisture against the crowns, and under the weight of snow it packs into a flat mat. The grass under that mat comes out of winter yellowed and thin, with bare patches where the layer was deepest, and a damp, dark mat is the kind of place snow mold gets started.

Niagara’s trees make this worse than it sounds. A property under mature maples or oaks can go from clear to buried in a week, and oak leaves in particular are slow to break down and heavy when wet. The mat also has to come off before the lawn can be cut in spring, which means the first outdoor job of the year is raking wet, half-rotted leaves off soft ground. Getting them off in November, while they’re still loose and the ground is firm, is the same job at a fraction of the effort.

03

Why the beds get cleared, and why there’s one more cut

Leaves don’t only land on grass. They drift into garden beds, pack in around the base of shrubs and perennials, and sit there wet. A bed cleared in fall goes into winter with air around the crowns instead of a soggy blanket over them, and spring starts with a clean bed rather than a morning spent pulling last year’s leaves out from between the plants. It’s the same job as the lawn, just in a tighter space.

Fall lawn care ends with one more cut, and it isn’t about looks. Grass that goes into winter long lies flat under the snow and stays wet underneath, which is the same damp, matted condition a leaf layer creates. A final cut sends the lawn into dormancy even and upright. That’s why a leaf cleanup that rakes and then leaves the grass alone is half a job: the leaves are gone, but the lawn still goes under the snow long.

What a fall cleanup should include, and when to book one

Rob’s fall cleanup is four things. Leaves cleared off the lawn and removed. Garden beds cleared. A final cut, so the grass goes into winter even instead of long and matted. And the walkways and driveway blown off, so the hard surfaces are clean when the snow arrives. That’s the whole list, and it’s worth confirming before you book anyone, since the difference between a real cleanup and a lawn that got mowed one more time shows up in April.

Book ahead of the window rather than into it; the cleanup window in Niagara is only a few weeks long. Robbs Lawncare does fall cleanups across all twelve Niagara municipalities from the end of October through mid-November, quoted per property, with no contract and no weekly schedule required. The dates, the four inclusions and the quote details are on the fall cleanup service page below. The last job of one season is what makes the first job of the next one easy.
